Parents Told to Abort Baby Call Disabled Son Gift

A U.K. couple told to abort the severely disabled baby growing in its mother's womb are delighted with their newborn son, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Julie Crampin, 36, and Antony Lara, 40, of Gloucester, ignored the advice of doctors who wanted the couple to terminate the pregnancy after a scan of the womb at 20 weeks revealed the baby would be severely disabled and unlikely to survive.

The boy, Marco Lara, was born with a range of serious conditions, including water on the brain, a hole in the heart and a narrowing of the outlet of the stomach.

The Annual March for Life '08

March for Life 07
Aloha...January is almost here and our annual March for Life will be held at the State Capitol on Tuesday, January 22, 3-6 p.m.

We can use some volunteers to help us that day - some of the service opportunities are:

- passing around petition clipboards
- passing out our brochures to attendees
- attending our table with give-away materials
- helping pass out the posters/signs to marchers AND collecting them after the march
- order and pick up leis for speakers (simple orchid ones) Get price - we have petty cash available
- putting leis on speakers as they are introduced
- calling our speakers to remind them (the week before, the day before, the morning of the march)
-holding up the "3-2-1-pau" signs in front of the speakers so we can try to keep them on time! :>)

ALSO: if you know someone who has an electric keyboard and stand that we could borrow for the rally, would you have them call the office at 585-8205. We also need some boom mikes for vocalists.

Thanks for helping the cause.

Planned Parenthood's Mockery of Christmas

The following is from American Life League

Planned Parenthood’s “Choice on Earth” cards offend
WASHINGTON, D.C. — “Planned Parenthood’s ‘Choice on Earth’ holiday cards are its latest assault on Christianity,” said Jim Sedlak, vice president of American life League. “By changing the word ‘peace’ to ‘choice’, Planned Parenthood is effectively implying that Mary should have considered aborting Jesus.”

American Life League’s latest video report exposes Planned Parenthood’s continued assault on Christianity. The report goes from ‘Choice on Earth’ holiday cards to Planned Parenthood’s involvement in a 1973 comic book that depicts a sacrilegious rendition of Mad Magazine’s Alfred E. Newman posing as the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“King Herod sent soldiers out to slaughter babies because he wanted to kill Jesus,” said Sedlak. “Two thousand years later, Planned Parenthood is still doing all it can to kill babies. That is what their motto ‘Choice on Earth’ really means.”

“Planned Parenthood continues to flaunt its anti-God, secular humanist agenda in its products and in our schools,” Sedlak concluded. “It is time for all Americans to stay away from this organization.”

MADRID, December 14, 2007 ( - For what is probably the first time in history, a television network in Spain has shown an abortion on national television.

The video, shot during a hidden-camera exposé on Spain's abortion industry, shows a nurse injecting deadly poison into the fetus through the vagina of a pregnant woman, who then expels her dead child, about five months old. The doctor immediately covers the body.

Congressman Hyde by Fr. Frank Pavone

Priests for Life Blog

When Congressman Henry Hyde passed away the other day, the nation lost another great leader. Those who follow the pro-life movement also know him as a key leader in the movement as well. He was not only a steady and persuasive voice for the unborn on the floor of the Congress, but one who yielded results that lasted - such as the Hyde Amendment, which has saved countless lives for decades by denying funds to the industry that would kill them.

I was with Henry Hyde on many occasions, in Washington and elsewhere. It was always an inspiration. The power of his words and actions as a force in Congress was matched by his kindness and attentiveness to all with whom he interacted.

As I travel the nation, I see each day the spiritual energy of pro-life activists. Henry Hyde’s example and consistent witness have been one of the sources of that energy.

He often spoke about the chorus of children’s voices that would greet pro-life activists on the day of their judgment. Now, his words have come to pass in his own case. “Thank you, Congressman Hyde! When so many ignored us, you spoke up for us. Welcome home.”

Children of God for Life

From Operation Rescue

From an email sent by them:

Police Destroy

Our Truth Truck!!!
They Throw Our Driver In Jail

And Trample On Our Free Speech Rights!

Your help is urgently needed
to help us fight this grave injustice!

Dear Friend of Operation Rescue,

This is an OUTRAGE!!!

Last Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving, when throngs of shoppers hit the malls -- one of our loyal, courageous Truth Truck drivers took the truck to a fancy shopping mall in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

He bravely Showed The Truth about abortion by driving all around the mall for hours with our eye-catching, impossible-to-ignore full-color pictures of aborted babies.

Somebody called the cops!

And when the Gwinnett County police officers got there, they immediately pulled the Truth Truck over and ARRESTED OUR DRIVER -- Bob Roethlisberger -- on charges of "disorderly conduct"!!!

Their reasoning? They claimed the pictures of aborted babies are "vulgar and obscene" -- and they demanded that Bob take them off the truck at once!

When he refused to do so, they handcuffed him and hauled him to jail!!!

That's right -- for exercising his First Amendment rights to Free Speech in a public forum, Bob Roethlisberger spent the entire weekend in the Gwinnett County jail -- with bail set at more than $2,500!!!

When Bob asked the police on what grounds they could dare to censor his message, one of the officers replied, "I AM the community censor!"

The Gwinnett County police were clearly HOSTILE to our pro-life message. Why, even the Magistrate signed the warrant to arrest Bob and silence the Truth Truck!!!

Worse Than Pro-Aborts!!!

In fact, as Bob was being booked into jail, the Truth Truck was IMPOUNDED -- and the police proceeded to DESTROY the signs and the mounting hardware on the Truck!

They violently RIPPED THE SIGNS OFF THE TRUCK and booked them as "evidence" -- as if taking photos wouldn't work.

Now we have NO SIGNS on the Truth Truck -- and no way to mount new ones since the police DESTROYED the mounting hardware!!!

Clearly, they're out to SILENCE the Truth Truck!!!

And listen: If we let them get away with this in Georgia, they'll do it EVERYWHERE!!!

That's why I need your help TODAY...

I'm heading down to Georgia as you read this.

I have to pay Bob Roethlisberger's bail, and then I'm going to confront the Gwinnett County police, face-to-face, and give them a piece of my mind!!!

I also have to get our signs back... repair the Truth Truck... and then drive it all around Gwinnett County and see if those "brown shirts" will ARREST ME!!!!

I'm Out of Money!

But... the problem is... I didn't have enough money for the flight to Atlanta. I had to borrow it from a friend!

Plus, I don't have the $2,580 for Bob's bail.

What's worse, to repair the mounting hardware on the Truth Truck will cost THOUSANDS of dollars!!!

And if the police won't give us our signs back, I'll be forced to spend more money to get NEW ones made!!!

All of this means one thing...

In fact, I need you to make a generous EMERGENCY DONATION to Operation Rescue while you're online reading this.

Just click here and you'll go straight to our secure Web site where you can make an instant gift by PayPal.

Your gift will immediately be put to good use as we fight this shocking abuse of police power in Georgia!

This is a civil rights violation unlike anything else I've witnessed in my years of operating the Truth Truck!

It's clearly a case of "content-based discrimination" and censorship of the pro-life message -- by "bully" cops who've probably paid for their girlfriends' abortions!!!

But you and I need to stand up to them and show them -- in no uncertain terms -- that they're messing with the wrong people!!!

When they violate our rights, WE FIGHT BACK!!!

So please let me know that you'll stand with us as we "face down" the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Your gift of $25... $35... even $50 or $100... will truly be a heaven-sent blessing right now.

And please pray for Bob Roethlisberger -- that the charges against him are dropped, and that he's never again harassed for showing the TRUTH about abortion!

We really need you on this one...

Operation Rescue is already facing a severe financial crisis. Now this!!!

Please donate today -- through our secure Web site -- and let us know that we have your much-needed support.

Thank you, and God bless.

Pray Hard!!!

Yours for the Babies...

Troy Newman

P.S. This is the kind of thing we'd expect the PRO-ABORTS to do to the Truth Truck in the middle of the night!!! They routinely spray-paint our signs... put potatoes in our exhaust pipes... try to put stuff in our gas tank? ANYTHING to destroy the Truth Trucks and silence our message.

But we NEVER expected this kind of violation and censorship to come from the POLICE!!!

Please help us fight back against this shocking outrage. Send us your special Emergency Donation -- while you're online -- by clicking here.

Your help is needed now more than ever!!!

Thank you so much for helping us save the babies!

Because Operation Rescue is on the cutting edge of the abortion issue, we are viewed as "politically incorrect" by many government agencies. Therefore, donations to OR are not tax-deductible. However, this allows us to speak our mind without fear of reprisals from the government. And that means your donations actually go farther in terms of exposing the abortion cartel and the politicians who support the baby-killing industry.

Babies Are Not Eco Friendly???

Shared by Easter
"...At the age of 27 this young woman at the height of her reproductive years was sterilised to "protect the planet".

Incredibly, instead of mourning the loss of a family that never was, her boyfriend (now husband) presented her with a congratulations card.

While some might think it strange to celebrate the reversal of nature and denial of motherhood, Toni relishes her decision with an almost religious zeal.

"Having children is selfish. It's all about maintaining your genetic line at the expense of the planet," says Toni, 35...."

Planned Parenthood - A Sex Book For Children

Caution: Explicit language and graphics.

I told Michael Hichborn of American Life League that I would be happy to share any news or videos from ALL with readers of this blog. The following video is a warning to parents.

As a a human being...I am outraged the the lengths Planned Parenthood goes to destroy the innocence of children.

American Life League releases video report on children's sex book

WASHINGTON, D.C. · November 19, 2007 / PRNewswire / – "Parents need to know what Planned Parenthood has in store for their children and this report is an excellent starting point," said Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League. "The book 'It's Perfectly Normal' is obscene and offensive to Christians."

American Life League's second video report exposes the contents of the book "It's Perfectly Normal." Recently, a Washington State Prison rejected a fundraising letter that included censored images from the book for being "sexually explicit" and "obscene."

American Life League released the report as a part of its continuing effort to educate the public on Planned Parenthood's activities.

"This video report is just the beginning," said Sedlak. "We will continue to use this new media to expose the nation's largest abortion chain and we call on Christians across the nation to join us in putting a stop to tax payer funds for Planned Parenthood."

Urgent Appeal From Hawaii Right to Life

Hawaii Right to Life
1050 Bishop Street
Honolulu, HI 96813-4210
(808) 943-1595

Dear Fellow Donor:

This year, I have some important victories and some very serious immediate challenges to relate to you.

In 2007, Hawaii Right to Life participated in significant victories in the Cause for Life. In the Hawaii Legislature, we testified on 10 Bills, including a great victory against House Bill 675 seeking to legalize Physician Assisted Suicide; after five hours of testimony, the bill was held (stopped) in Committee. The forces supporting Physician Assisted Suicide will attempt to raise again this issue in the January Legislature.

Hawaii Right to Life supported these bills which are alive for the January session:
(a) HB731-Crimes Against a Viable Fetus (a Laci Peterson Law)
(b) HB786/SB205/SB1094/HB788-Abortion: Parental Notification/Consent Required
(c) HB787 & SB129-Prohibition of Partial-Birth Abortion.

In the fight for life, Hawaii Right to Life testified to oppose: (a)HB675/SB800/SB1995-Death with Dignity; (b) HB466/SB110-Emerg. Contraception (or Abortifacient), among other Bills. These Bills are "alive" and to be promoted again by the forces of the Culture of Death.

Ongoing activities included March for Life 2007 at the State Capitol (on OLELO TV); providing pro-life educational information to 50 schools, churches and organizations; the National Day of Prayer; messages on KLHT 1040 AM; action alerts on pro-life issues; providing pro-life information concerning Health Care Rationing, Euthanasia and Advanced Directives at the large Senior Fair "The Good Life Expo," Blasidell and public pro-life information.

Your prayers, donations, and time are the life of Hawaii Right to Life in our united battle to protect he pre-born, disabled, elderly and each of our lives. When the toughest battles for life are on the horizon, Hawaii Right to Life needs urgently your additional donations and time.

We humbly ask you to give a one-time, large, up-front emergency donation, as well as a continued monthly commitment by credit card, using the enclosed material.

We have scheduled March for Life on 22 Jan 2008 at 3:00 PM at the State Capitol. Our website has more information and a bulletin insert your church may download. We need you to respond now. We literally cannot go on without you.

Science Web Site Misleads Women Saying Abortion-Breast CanCer Link a Myth

A leading web site on science issues ran an article on Tuesday from its "junk science" reporter that misleads women by saying the abortion-breast cancer link is nonexistent. It also says there is little or no way to prevent breast cancer, despite studies showing that having children helps protect women from the disease.

Message From HRTL - We're Moving

Would you pass this message along to whoever might be interested.

Hawaii Right to Life has to move from Puck's Alley. We have been on month-to-month as they wanted a higher-paying tenant. We have to be out Oct. 26. We will be moving into a smaller office downtown.

We have so many really nice printed materials that we can't take with us. Therefore, we are offering them free to pro-life parties. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please give me a call at the office (943-1595) and make a date to come into the office. They're free!

We have a lot of materials aimed toward teens, including some abstinence materials.

Also, if you know some churches that would like materials, pass this message along.

My Abortion Story

by Pat Cabalse
While living in Philadelphia, I met this really nice young OB/GYN doctor and we fell in “love.” A few weeks later I was pregnant and he wanted nothing to do with either of us and wanted me to abort his child, saying it “would ruin his life.” As a single girl with no other person to turn to, I agreed.

Well, three months later, I put out extra food for my cat, swallowed about 200+ pills, including 2 kinds of narcotics, with a fair-sized bottle of wine to “sleep faster.” It was New Year’s Eve and I could no longer live with what I had done. I was a murderer – of my own child. I woke up in a hospital bed after CPR to restart my heart. I had bruises the size of footballs as no one had padded the bed side rails, 5 (locked with a key) leather restraints (on wrists, ankles and waist ) as they said I woke up with a lot of violence, and I had tubes in every opening of my body. Depression followed. I had changed from a young lady looking forward to a bright future to one locked away in a horrible secret place.

For the next 21 years, each time I met someone to say hello, my first thought was ALWAYS, “If she only knew who I was, she’d hate me!” That repeated in my mind over and over for 21 years. Not even God could forgive this! I named my baby Amy and never forgot her.

Then a miracle happened. My church had a weeklong retreat on “Returning to God” with confession available at the end of each day’s session. After the 4th day of the retreat, I slipped into the confessional and told the visiting priest about my abortion and 21 years of pain that followed. It was the first time I admitted out loud the secret I carried deep inside for so long. He asked me if I had ever confessed this before and I said no, that I was unable to do so. There was too much guilt and shame to say it out loud.

That night after the confession, I had the most wonderful dream. I saw a blinding bright light which turned out to be millions and millions of tiny bright babies (newborn- sized) dressed in blinding white robes, out of which a tiny light floated toward me. It was a tiny (full-term) baby with dazzling bright white hair, eyes, body, and clothing. She introduced herself to me, saying, “Hi, I’m Amy. I love you, Mommy.” And she thanked me for giving her a name. Amy told me she is happy in Heaven; that she doesn’t hate me, that she understands why I did what I did, that she loves me and I will see her some day. After the dream ended, I cried hard for several days – and the healing finally began.

Today, I am happily married to a wonderful man and we havetwo2 children and three grandchildren whom I love. My daughter is a single mom of a 4-year-old son, Kobe. She struggles at times and we help her, but she says with great joy that Kobe is THE best thing that ever happened to her. She’s a good, happy mom.

As for me, I have three children – two with me, and one in Heaven.

Bev's Broadcast - HRTL Since Abortion #211

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life.

Since the tragic decision to legalize abortion in 1973, 46 million babies have been murdered thru various brutal and gruesome acts of abortion.

Since then, we have desensitized, sanitized and justified the killing of an unwanted baby with reasons such as:

-the baby would not have the care and love it needed,
-every baby should be wanted
-it’s for the babies own good
-after all it’s just a blob of protoplasm.

Since then, Hawaii Right to Life has been fighting to change that culture of death and disposable life, because, since way before then, the Bible says in Psalms 139:13.
“For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy and need more information call our office at 943-1595 or go to our web site at HRTL.

Louisiana Abortion Law on Ultrasounds and Baby's Pain Goes Into Effect

Baton Rouge, LA ( -- Louisiana is the next state to have a law go into effect that tells a woman considering an abortion that her baby will feel considerable pain during the procedure. The measure also requires abortion businesses to give women the option of seeing an ultrasound of their unborn child beforehand.

Bev's Broadcast - HRTL Partial Birth Abortion #210

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life.

I want to educate you on the facts of Partial Birth Abortion.

First of all, the definition of Partial Birth Abortion is an abortion in the second or third trimester of pregnancy in which the death of the fetus is induced after it has passed partway through the birth canal.

Most partial-birth abortions are performed on healthy mothers with healthy babies. There is no obstetrical situation that requires the willful destruction of a partially delivered baby to protect the life, health or future of a woman. The procedure’s impact on a woman’s body can even put future pregnancies at risk.

At 20 weeks of gestation, the baby’s brain has the full complement of brain cells for the baby to feel prolonged and excruciating pain.

For more information on Partial Birth Abortion you can go to our web site at HRTL.

Adult Stem Cells Rebuild Alabama Woman's Heart

Alabama event planner Carron Morrow was hanging Japanese lanterns for a wedding last summer when she suffered her fourth heart attack. A week later, the doctor told the 58-year-old mother of two she was a walking time bomb: The right side of her heart was functioning at less than 50 percent. They tried stents and a defibrillator. Then she was put on the heart transplant list.

Bev's Broadcast - HRTL #208 It’s All about Life

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life.

The Bible says “The harvest is plenty but the workers are few”. I believe that we are put on this earth to Glorify God. One way to do that is to serve Him fathrully. I want Jesus to say “well done my good and faithful servant” when meet him in heaven.
We are working hard each day to educate our schools, government, churches and media to the value of God’s gift of life. Jesus died on the cross so that we may have Life and have it more abundantly. That means, life is to be cherished and protected from conception to natural death.

If you would like to serve, we have opportunities for everyone from teens to senior citizens. We have opportunities ranging from starting chapters, becoming a church liaison, helping in the office or simply praying for innocent lives. We welcome your help in bringing back a culture of life to Hawaii. Our phone number is 943-1595.

2008 State Legislature Session

The 2008 legislature is always on our minds. We are gathering up our resources and networking with state and National Pro-Life organizations to efficiently defend to protect life in Hawaii.
For the 2008 session, we will be ready on the offensive and defensive.

2007 Legislation Session - Past

The 2007-2008 Legislative session started with a bang for Hawaii Right to Life. We weighed in on 10 bills. The bill attracting the most attention from media and public was House Bill 675 which would have legalized Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) .The battle was long, but by God’s Grace, the bill was held in committee. There is always the possibility of its being revived again during the upcoming January session.

The following are bills which we supported and that passed Second Reading and were assigned to a committee. No committee hearings were scheduled but the bills remain “alive” for the next session in January.

HB 731 – Crimes Against a Viable Fetus (a Laci Peterson law); HB 786 / SB 205 / SB 1904 – Abortion: Parental Notification; HB 787 & SB 129 – Prohibition of Partial-Birth Abortion; HB 788 – Abortion: Parental Consent.

HB 731 will need your help in urging a hearing for the bill in the House Health and Judiciary committees next year. This bill would add protection for a viable unborn baby who is injured or killed by an attack on the mother. Offenses could include charges of murder, manslaughter, or negligent injury. The seemingly inexplicable opposition to such bills rests on premise that it would recognize that the “something” in the mother’s womb is a “person” in the eyes of the law. They suspect that it would be the “slippery slope” for overturning Roe v. Wade.

HB 1830 – Safe Haven – passed the legislature and is before the Governor. It would provide immunity from prosecution for persons who leave an unharmed newborn at a hospital, fire station, or police station within 72 hours of the child’s birth. She is considering vetoing the bill because it “allows anyone to leave an infant without regard to legal possession or related to the infant and having no genealogical or medical information about the child.” There are no provisions for protecting the rights of both parents or extended family such as grandparents. Governor Lingle is concerned that “the infant would be placed at a disadvantage regarding eligibility for blood-quantum programs.

A seeming contradiction was our support for SB 1421 on the licensing of osteopathic doctors. While adding such doctors to the list of those who can perform abortions, the bill retains the restrictions on aborting “viable fetuses” and reaffirms the “conscience clause” that prevents doctors or hospitals from being forced to perform abortions.

Among the bills which we opposed were: HB 364 – Human Stem Cell Research; HB 455 / SB 1111 – Family Planning, Contraception, Health Education; HB 456 Relating to Emergency OTC Contraception (morning-after pills for Medicaid patients); HB 464 / SB 1114 – Sexual Health Education (aimed at abstinence ed); HB 466 / SB 1110 – Emergency Contraception; HB 675 – Death with Dignity; SB 800 – Death with Dignity; SB 1261 – Human Stem Cell Research; SB 1995 – Death with Dignity. These bills are still “alive” and waiting for hearings in the 2008 session.

If you would like to receive e-mail alerts regarding action on these bills, please send us your e-mail address. Send to During the session, we will let you know what legislators to contact to request their support or opposition during hearings or floor action.

Bev's Broadcast - #205 Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life

I recently attended the National Right to Life convention where Bobby Schindler brother of Terri Shiavo was a guest speaker. Bobby made us laugh and cry with his testimony of his families fight for Terri’s’ life. I applaud the Schindler family for their faith in God, endurance of constant news coverage and battles in the courts to keep Terri alive.

Not wanting the same fate to befall other disabled patients, they founded an organization to assist other incapacitated or minimally conscious patients called the Terri Schindler Shiavo Foundation. Since then, they've come to the aid of dozens of families and patients across the country to help them fight legal battles and get medical care.

The Schindler family and pro-life advocates whose goal is to take incapacitated or minimally conscious patients who have nowhere to go. Ultimately, the foundation wants to open a medical center to provide care for those patients like Terri who can't find it anywhere else. For more information Please visit Terri's Fight

Bev's Broadcast - #204 S. 5 Stem Cell Bills

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life

The U.S. Senate approved legislation (S. 5) on April 11, 2007 that would mandate federal funding of the type of stem cell research that requires the killing of human embryos.

Senator Akaka voted in support of the bill and Senator Inouye voted against the bill. The House of Representatives passed very similar legislation (H.R. 3) in January. Representative Abercrombie and Hirano both voted in support of this bill.

Quoting from the statement of Administration Policy

“President Bush has said that he will veto the legislation. The Administration believes that government has a duty to use the people’s money responsibly, both supporting important public purposes and respecting moral boundaries.”

The Senate also passed S. 30 (sponsored by Senators Norm Coleman, and Johnny Isakson, a bill to encourage research on stem cells obtained in ways that do not require the harming of human embryos.

Bev's Broadcast - #204 Patients First Act Stem Cell Bills

This is Beverly Larranaga of Hawaii Right to Life

We applaud President Bush for his veto of S.5 for the second time that would force taxpayers to finance embryonic stem cell research; two members of Congress say it's again time to look at ethical alternatives.

The House members have introduced a bill they say promote stem cell science everyone can rally around. Reps. Randy Forbes, a New York Republican, and Dan Lipinski, an Illinois Democrat, have introduced H.R. 2807, the "Patients First Act."

Their measure would promote research and clinical trials using stem cells that are ethically obtained and show evidence providing clinical benefit for human patients. With scientists making progress and breakthroughs such as discovery of stem cells in amniotic fluid and embryonic-like stem cells from skin cells, their bill would prioritize this type of ethical and promising research.

We applaud and support the Patients first Act and the legislators who introduced it.

Bev's Broadcast - Pro-Life Youth Groups # 203

This is Beverly Larranaga, Executive Director of Hawaii Right to Life.

Our youth are our future and an investment in their future is the wisest thing we can do for our community. The Bible says in Proverbs 22 “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it”

We are looking for college and high students who would be interested in starting or getting involved in a Pro-life youth group in their church or school. Our goal is to educate students about the issues of abstinence, abortion, euthanasia, and infanticide.

-The first step is to identify students who have passion for the pro-life movement.

-The second step to encourage and support the students with the resources, skills and training.

-The third step is to do hold student activities in schools, churches and the community.

If you are interested or know anyone who is, please call our office at 943-1595 for more information.

Clinic to weed out embryos with a squint

Embryos are to be screened for a cosmetic defect for the first time in a British clinic.

Doctors have been given permission to create a baby free from a genetic disorder which would have caused the child to have a severe squint.

The Bridge Centre family clinic, in London, has been licensed to treat a businessman and his wife to create the baby. Both the businessman and his father suffer from the condition, which causes the eyes only to look downwards or sideways.

Critics have said that the permission is another step on the road to creating only perfect-looking babies in the laboratory.

Letter From President Bush

On May 3rd, 2007, President Bush sent the following letter to Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi:
Dear Mr. Leader/Madam Speaker:

I am concerned that this year the Congress may consider legislation that could substantially change Federal policies and laws on abortion, and allow taxpayer dollars to be used for the destruction of human life. I am writing to make sure that there is no misunderstanding of my views on these important issues.

Our Nation was founded on the belief that every human being has rights, dignity, and matchless value. Every child should be welcomed into life and protected in law. The advancement of science and medicine need not conflict with the ethical imperative to cherish and protect every life. In fact, advances in science have made it possible to see life developing at earlier stages and underscore Americans’ obligation to protect helpless and innocent life from destruction, whether it is in the womb or elsewhere. These issues are deeply emotional and are made even more complicated when the American taxpayer is asked to fund efforts that end human life.

As you know, current law prohibits Federal funding for abortion, both domestically and internationally, except in cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is endangered. Recent legislative practice has ensured that taxpayer funds do not underwrite organizations that perform or promote abortion as a method of family planning. Current U.S. law protects human embryos. The standing pattern is that appropriate conscience protections must be in place for health care entities, and that taxpayer dollars may not be used in coercive or involuntary family planning programs.

I urge that these and other existing, important protections be respected and continued. I believe it is the most basic duty of Government to guard the innocent. With that in mind, I will veto any legislation that weakens current Federal policies and laws on abortion, or that encourages the destruction of human life at any stage.

Lawmakers introduce "Freedom for Partial-Birth Abortionists Act" (FOCA)

The following article regarding the introduction in Congress of the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA) -- a bill that would, among other things, once again legalize partial-birth abortion -- will appear in the May edition of National Right to Life News. For further information, call the NRLC Federal Legislation Department at 202-626-8820, send e-mail to, or visit the NRLC website page on the FOCA. To go to the NRLC Legislative Action Center to take action now against the FOCA, click here. Please forward this e-mail to any appropriate lists.

The "Freedom for Partial-Birth Abortionists Act" -- Pro-Abortion Lawmakers Propose "FOCA" to Invalidate All Limits on Abortion

WASHINGTON (April 25, 2007) – In response to the April 18 U.S.Supreme Court decision upholding the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, prominent Democratic members of Congress the next day reintroduced the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA), a proposed federal law to nullify virtually all federal and state limitations on abortion.

NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson commented, "In the interests of truth in advertising, the bill should be renamed the ‘Freedom for Partial-Birth Abortionists Act'."

The House bill, H.R. 1964, was introduced by Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who in the new Democratic-majority Congress is the chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee that has jurisdiction over such legislation. At NRL News deadline on April 25, his bill had 71 cosponsors (70 Democrats, one Republican). (To view an always-current list of co-sponsors, arranged by state, click here.)
The Senate bill, S. 1173, introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Ca.), had 13 Democratic cosponsors, including presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY), plus independent Joseph Lieberman (Ct.). (To view an always-current list of co-sponsors, arranged by state, click here.)
The lawmakers proposing the legislation, and groups endorsing it, repeatedly emphasized that the bill would, among other things, completely nullify the national ban on partial-birth abortion that the Supreme Court upheld on April 18 in Gonzales v. Carhart.

Congressman Nadler issued a statement harshly attacking the Supreme Court ruling. "Overturning a decision only a few years old, the Court has, for the first time since Roe v. Wade, allowed an abortion procedure to be criminalized," Nadler said. The FOCA, he noted, "would bar government – at any level -- from interfering with a woman's fundamental right to choose to bear a child, or to terminate a pregnancy."

Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women, also tied the FOCA directly to the Supreme Court ruling, explaining in an e-mailed alert that the bill "would legislatively reverse the Court's damaging decision and will enshrine in federal law our right to safe, legal abortion. . . . Our ultimate success depends on electing a president who will sign the legislation and electing a Congress that can withstand any challenge or filibuster."

"Those promoting this bill intend to use it as a litmus test for those who seek congressional office, or the White House, and as fundraising tool," NRLC's Douglas Johnson explained. "They know they cannot enact anything like this, so long as a pro-life president is in the White House."

Not Only a "Codification of Roe"
The promoters of the FOCA sometimes claim that its purpose is to "codify Roe v. Wade," the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand. But the key binding provisions of the bill would go further than Roe, invalidating all of the major types of pro-life laws that have been upheld by the Supreme Court in the decades since Roe.

"The claim that the bill would ‘codify Roe' is just a marketing gimmick by the proponents," explained Johnson. "The sponsors hope that journalists and legislators will lazily accept that vague shorthand phrase – but it is very misleading. The references to Roe in the bill are in non-binding, discursive clauses. The heart of the bill is a ban that would nullify all of the major types of pro-life laws that the Supreme Court has said are permissible under Roe v. Wade, including the ban on partial-birth abortions and bans on government funding of abortion."
The bill flatly invalidates any "statute, ordinance, regulation, administrative order, decision, policy, practice, or other action" of any federal, state, or local government or governmental official (or any person acting under government authority) that would "deny or interfere with a woman's right to choose" abortion, or that would "discriminate against the exercise of the right . . . in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information."

This no-restriction policy would establish, in Senator Boxer's words, "the absolute right to choose" prior to fetal "viability."

The no-restriction policy would also apply after "viability" to any abortion sought on grounds of "health." The bill does not define "health," but in some past abortion cases the Supreme Court has sometimes used the term to apply to any physical or emotional consideration whatsoever, including "distress."

The term "viability" is usually understood to refer to the point at which a baby's lungs are developed to the point that he or she can in fact survive independently of the mother – currently, about 23 or 24 weeks. However, the bill contains no objective criteria for "viability," but rather, requires that the judgment regarding "viability" be left entirely in the hands of "the attending physician" – which is to say, the abortionist.
The bill also prohibits any government actions that would "deny or interfere with a woman's right to choose to bear a child," but supporters of the bills have not cited any actual laws that would be invalidated by that provision.

Effects Admitted by Supporters
In a factsheet posted on its website, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) explains, "FOCA will supercede anti-choice laws that restrict the right to choose, including laws that prohibit the public funding of abortions for poor women or counseling and referrals for abortions. Additionally, FOCA will prohibit onerous restrictions on a woman's right to choose, such as mandated delays and targeted and medically unnecessary regulations."

In addition, PPFA explained, "Parental consent or notification statutes have been used as a tool to deny access to abortion services for minors. When such laws deny or interfere with the ability of minors to access abortion services, they would violate FOCA." (About half of the states have parental notification or consent laws in effect, which the Supreme Court has said are permitted under Roe v. Wade as long as they meet certain requirements, including availability of judges to authorize abortions without parental notification or consent.)

In a press release issued when she introduced the FOCA in 2004, Senator Boxer gave a number of examples of current laws that would be invalidated by the bill, including:
-- Laws restricting government funding of abortion. (The Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding of most abortions, and many states have similar laws. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that these laws do not violate Roe v. Wade.)
-- Laws prohibiting abortions in public hospitals. (The Supreme Court ruled in 1977 that such policies do not violate Roe v. Wade.)
-- Laws requiring that girls and women seeking abortion receive certain information on matters such as fetal development and alternatives to abortion, and then wait a specified period before the abortion is actually performed, usually 24 or 48 hours. In her press release, Boxer referred to these as "antichoice propaganda lectures." (The Supreme Court said in its 1992 Casey ruling that such regulations are constitutional as long as they do not impose an "undue burden" on obtaining an abortion.)

Other Effects

NRLC's Johnson said that a number of other types of laws also would clearly be invalidated by the bill:
-- All laws allowing doctors, nurses, or other state-licensed professionals, and hospitals or other health-care providers, to decline to provide or pay for abortions. (Such "conscience rights" with respect to abortion are generally protected by certain federal laws, and by the laws in many states. Supporters of the laws usually call them "conscience laws," but pro-abortion groups refer to them as "refusal clauses.")
-- All laws prohibiting medical personnel other than licensed physicians from performing abortions would be invalid because they may "interfere with" access to abortion. (All but a handful of states currently enforce such "doctor-only" laws, which are specifically authorized in Roe v. Wade itself.)
-- The provision of the FOCA that prohibits any government agency or official from taking any action that would "discriminate against the exercise of" the FOCA-created legal rights, with respect to any "benefits, facilities, services, or information," would leave government officials open to lawsuits for anything that anybody thought "discriminate(s)" against abortion. Johnson observed, "This sweeping mandate could cover everything from rural health clinics, to health education programs in public schools – and even to pro-life speeches by public officials."

History of the FOCA

An earlier version of the FOCA was pushed by pro-abortion forces beginning in the late 1980s, when they feared that the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade. When President Clinton, a FOCA supporter, took office in January 1993, Planned Parenthood predicted that the FOCA would be law within six months. But the bill died after an education and lobbying campaign, led by NRLC, persuaded many pro-Roe lawmakers that the bill went beyond Roe and would strike down many state laws that had broad support.

Johnson noted that during the debates over the FOCA in the early 1990s, many proponents of the bill often tried to deny some of its more radical effects – effects that they have already admitted with respect to the new bill, such as the invalidation of all restrictions on government funding of abortion.
The original FOCA faded from view after Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in the 1994 election.

March 9, 2007
Mr. STEARNS (for himself, Mr. LINCOLN DAVIS of Tennessee, Mr. RENZI, and Mrs. SCHMIDT) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives with respect to pregnancy resource centers.

Whereas more than 2,500 pregnancy resource centers across the United States meet the comprehensive physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of women and men facing unplanned pregnancies;
Whereas pregnancy resource centers offer women in economic hardship free pregnancy tests, counseling, and childbirth and parenting classes they could not otherwise afford;
Whereas many pregnancy resource centers offer ultrasound and adoption services to pregnant mothers;
Whereas pregnancy resource centers encourage women to make positive life choices by equipping them with complete and accurate information regarding their pregnancy options and the development of their preborn child;
Whereas pregnancy resource centers ensure that women are receiving prenatal information and services that lead to the birth of healthy newborn infants;
Whereas pregnancy resource centers provide women with compassionate and confidential counsel in a nonjudgmental manner regardless of their pregnancy outcomes;
Whereas Federal and State governments are increasingly recognizing the valuable services of pregnancy resource centers through the designation of public funds for such organizations;
Whereas many pregnancy resource centers work to prevent crisis pregnancies by teaching effective abstinence education in public schools; and
Whereas pregnancy resource centers operate primarily through reliance on the voluntary donations and time of caring individuals who are committed to caring for the needs of women and promoting and protecting life: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) strongly supports pregnancy resource centers for their unique, positive contribution to the individual lives of women, men, and babies--both born and unborn;
(2) commends the compassionate work of tens of thousands of volunteers and paid staff at pregnancy resource centers across the United States;
(3) encourages the Congress and Federal and State government agencies to grant pregnancy resource centers assistance for medical equipment and abstinence education in a manner that does not compromise the religious integrity of such organizations; and
(4) decries the actions of any national, State, or local groups attempting to prevent pregnancy resource centers from effectively serving women and men facing unplanned pregnancies.

Mexico City Legislature Approves Bill Legalizing Abortion, Lawsuit Likely

Mexico City, Mexico ( -- The legislature of Mexico's capital city has approved a bill that would legalize abortion within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. While legal abortions in very limited cases such as rape and incest occur in various parts of the country, Mexico largely prohibits abortions -- and the measure is the first step in overturning those laws.

British Study of Hospitals Over 20 Years Finds Many Babies Survive Abortion

London, England ( -- A new study from Britain involving an analysis of 20 years of data covering 10 hospitals finds that one baby in 30 survives an abortion attempt. The survey sheds more light on how many abortions are unsuccessful and the kind of care medical facilities should offer babies who survive botched abortions.

"American Idol" Poverty Program Funds Heading to Pro-Abortion Groups

Washington, DC ( -- A pro-life organization that serves as a watchdog for corporate donations to Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups says the popular "American Idol" program is indirectly backing two organizations that endorse abortion.

Finding Real Alternatives to Abortion

Interview With Official of Pro-life Government-Funded Agency

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania, APRIL 19, 2007 ( In 1995, Pennsylvania started a bold, state-funded initiative to reduce the number of abortions by providing pregnant women the necessary resources to keep their children.

In this interview with ZENIT, Kevin Bagatta, president & chief executive officer of Real Alternatives, (, discusses the Pennsylvania Alternative to Abortion Services Program and how it has helped abortion rates in the state to fall steadily.
Q: How did you get involved in Real Alternatives?

Bagatta: My three brothers and I were born and raised on Long Island, New York. Both of our parents are handicapped. My Italian-American dad, a World War II veteran, walks with cane and a brace and my Irish-American mom became paralyzed with polio during the polio epidemic.

They both taught us -- and still do -- the true value of life. Having watched the culture of death practiced by Nazi Germany, they immediately explained to my brothers and I how wrong the Roe vs. Wade decision was that legalized abortion in America and the ill effects it would have on our country.

Q: Real Alternatives seeks to encourage childbirth instead of abortion. How did it begin?

Bagatta: In 1994, Pennsylvania Governor Robert Casey placed alternative to abortion services program funding in the state budget.

In 1995, I answered an advertisement in the local newspaper from a pro-life organization looking for a director to start a statewide government-funded program.

Real Alternatives was established to be the statewide administrator of the Pennsylvania Alternative to Abortions Services Program [PAASP].

With a dedicated staff of 12 and nine board members, we contract with 120 service providers made up of pregnancy support centers, social service agencies like Catholic Charities, adoption agencies and maternity homes throughout the state to reach out to women in unplanned or crisis pregnancies.

The concept of government-funded social services is not new.

Well over 30 years ago, the state saw nonprofit charitable agencies that served women who were in a unique crisis either due to domestic violence or rape, and decided to fund them so they would provide more service and reach more women.

With PAASP, the state saw nonprofit charitable agencies serving women who uniquely experience another type of crisis -- an unplanned pregnancy. By funding these nonprofit charities, the centers would be able to have the necessary resources to reach more women.

That is exactly what has happened. In fiscal year 1996, we served 6,715 women statewide with 72 centers. In fiscal year 2005, we served 16,600 women with 120 centers. With the necessary financial resources, centers opened more sites and hired more counselors and continue to serve more women in need. To date, over 123,000 women have been served under the program.

Q: Does Real Alternatives have appeal for abortion-advocates as well?

Bagatta: It ought to. Once there is a crisis pregnancy, this is the only program established to help a woman in need choose life. By providing a counselor to be with the woman in need from the moment she finds out she is pregnant to 12 months after the birth of the baby, this program empowers the mother to overcome her obstacles and crisis. She is not alone. She knows someone is with her to help her.

An alternative to abortion is not a pamphlet, it is another person; it is one woman seeing another woman in crisis and loving her and supporting her like she is her own daughter. This program represents the best in America.

Q: Recently you began working with faith-based organizations. How does that teamwork happen, practically speaking?

Bagatta: This has been a greatly welcomed change in our ability to use experienced service providers to serve women throughout the state.

Again, due to interpretation of U.S. Supreme Court First Amendment cases, we were restricted in the type of faith-based organizations we were allowed to contract due to the program being funded with government money.

Thanks to President George Bush's Faith-Based Initiative Executive Order, all entities administering government funds are allowed to contract with faith-based organizations as long as the faith-based organization keeps their promotion of religion separate from the government-funded service.

Now, women can receive our government-funded service from a faith-based organization like Catholic Charities and also receive religious services and support.

Q: Your program recommends abstinence for young people. What is the most difficult part of educating youth in this?

Bagatta: Remember, when we see young women in our centers they have already become sexually active.

Not all young women, however, who think they are pregnant when they come to our centers are indeed pregnant. For them, our goal is modify their risky lifestyle and behavior, not accommodate it.

We do not want them to come through our doors again. We not only want them to avoid a teen pregnancy but also a sexually transmitted disease. Abstinence is the only way to lower teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Since this is the healthiest lifestyle for teens; this is what we recommend.

Youth and parents are very ignorant or misinformed about the epidemic of sexually transmitted disease among our teenage population.

In America, one out of two youths will acquire an STD before the age of 25. The only contraceptive that attempts to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases is the condom and it fails.

For example, in 2001, a U.S. governmental study revealed no proof that condoms prevented transmission of gonorrhea, chlamydia infection, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, syphilis, chancroid, and HPV-associated diseases.

We have known for years that certain strains of HPV cause deadly cervical cancer. Once we found out about these studies, we told the teenage girls this information so they could avoid these diseases -- which in some cases are incurable and cause death -- through abstinence.

Teenagers are smart and want the facts.

Q: Your Web site explains that a main goal is providing information so that a client can make an educated and informed choice about her health and that of her baby. How much does a "typical" client know about abortion?

Bagatta: Many times a woman assumes that there is just this "blob of tissue" that is removed. This is why tasteful, medically accurate fetal development photos interest her and why we have them on our Web site.

In addition, counselors provide information of the types of abortion performed and the risks associated with abortion. This information is provided to ensure that women who are considering abortion are fully informed about what is occurring in an abortion and of the ramifications of that decision.

The primary purpose of the program is to provide pregnancy support services that promote childbirth instead of abortion. Women seeking alternatives to abortion appreciate as many facts as possible when they are undecided about what to do in a crisis pregnancy. Providing her with facts empowers her and ensures she is fully informed before she makes a decision.

Q: Real Alternatives continues to provide assistance to mothers and fathers even after babies are born. Why and how does this work?

Bagatta: The client arrives at the service provider and starts to receive counseling support that meets her needs.

If she is not sure she is pregnant, then a pregnancy self-test kit will be offered to her. If she is pregnant, the counselor will listen to the expressed concern she has about the pregnancy. If she is new to parenting, parenting classes or stress management counseling might be offered to ensure the crisis pregnancy does not become a crisis-parenting situation.

Each woman seeking the services comes as a unique individual. As such, her family, her education, her beliefs and her experiences shape her.

This program provides a person to assist and mentor the woman to overcome her obstacles and meet her needs from the time she finds out she is pregnant until her baby is 12 months old.

Q: Explain how other states have looked to Pennsylvania with thoughts of implementing similar programs. Could this become a nationwide program?

Bagatta: Once we established the program and abortions started to decrease in Pennsylvania, other state pro-life organizations became interested in this first-of-its-kind program. Remember, using tax dollars to promote life was revolutionary.

As a result of our educating these pro-life organization about the program, state governors and legislatures in Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Florida and Texas placed funding of Alternative to Abortion Services programs in their budgets.

Most of the states could not fund their programs at the $5.5 million a year level of Pennsylvania and now have much smaller programs. The state of Texas, however, proposed a large $2.5-million-a-year program and asked us to replicate our program there.

Real Alternatives, through its government audits, has earned the reputation in Pennsylvania as a fiscally responsible and trusted custodian of public funds.

This is the program that works in America lowering abortions and is certainly the compassionate and caring approach that should be tried in the rest of the world and funded as an additional program through the United Nations.

Partial Birth Abortion: Candidates reactions

H/T to Catholic Fire

By Valerie Jane

What is a candidate to do with this new ruling?
Some have already reacted. Here are just a few quotes:

Barack Obama:
"I am extremely concerned that this ruling will embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman's right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade, which is established federal law and a matter of equal rights for women."

Rudy Giuliani :
"The Supreme Court reached the correct conclusion in upholding the congressional ban on partial birth abortion. I agree with it."

John Edwards:
"I could not disagree more strongly with today's Supreme Court decision. The ban upheld by the Court is an ill-considered and sweeping prohibition that does not even take account for serious threats to the health of individual women."

Mitt Romney:
"Today, our nation's highest court reaffirmed the value of life in America by upholding a ban on a practice that offends basic human decency. This decision represents a step forward in protecting the weakest and most innocent among us."

Hillary Clinton:
"This decision marks a dramatic departure from four decades of Supreme Court rulings that upheld a woman's right to choose and recognized the importance of women's health. Today's decision blatantly defies the Court's recent decision in 2000 striking down a state partial-birth abortion law because of its failure to provide an exception for the health of the mother."

According to many of the pro-choicers who visit us, this ruling is "not a big deal".

I think some people disagree.
