Letter to the Editor - There's no 'dignity' in assisted suicide

Honolulu Star Bulletin
Last month, Democratic leadership of the Hawaii House of Representatives fast-tracked the so-called "Death with Dignity" bills, House Bill 587 and HB 806, re-assigning them from both the Health and Judiciary committees to just one, Judiciary. Physician-assisted suicide is an issue that intimately involves the medical community, in addition to affecting the public. Bypassing the Health committee and not allowing this legislation to be considered by health experts shows ignorance and disrespect on the part of House leadership for the health care community and people of Hawaii.

Legalization of physician- assisted suicide irrevocably transforms the role of the physician-healer from one of preserving life to one of ending life. It leads to deterioration of the doctor-patient relationship and adversely affects the entire health care delivery system.

We know watching Oregon and the Netherlands that physician-assisted suicide leaves society's most vulnerable — the poor, sick, elderly and disabled — subject to abuse and coercion, regardless of proposed safeguards. Once the door to doctor-facilitated death is opened, the expectation arises that certain population segments have a "duty to die" because they are "less useful" and "over-users of resources." This leads to genocide, eugenics and abuses of the worst kind.

By Judie Brown
America is witnessing a Catholic identity meltdown and there have been a series of explanations for this over the course of the past several months. I am not talking about faithful Catholics who love their faith and their Church. I am specifically referring to those who insist on defining their religious identity as Catholic, while backing away from, or passionately supporting, the act of abortion. Such people, whether they realize it or not, and I believe they do, are sending mixed messages to Americans about what it truly means to be Catholic.

Most recently, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, Colorado, addressed the problem of pro-abortion Catholics in public life. He told a reporter

I don't know if it's because we've let it go on for such a long time and haven't challenged it before now, but this attitude of being comfortable with being pro-choice and Catholic at the same time seems to be deeply set in the lives of these folks.

Perhaps, but I think the problem is far deeper than what we might initially want to believe.

History teaches us that there is a simple explanation for this current problem, which is not really that current and frankly, not really that difficult to analyze. A few examples, beginning with one historical figure that perhaps set the tone for what the archbishop is describing as a "very bad period of catechesis" may shed light on the dilemma.

A biographical tribute to Margaret Sanger, founder of the American Birth Control League, which later became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, describes her as a young woman who had herself baptized into the Catholic Church at the age of 13.

Though her dalliance with Catholic identity was apparently short lived, the very idea that she was a Catholic and was raised by a devoutly Catholic mother should give us pause to wonder about her obvious obdurate change in direction. What happened to this woman who ultimately took it upon herself to attack the very Church she once joined?

Angela Franz wrote a marvelously well documented article that focused on Sanger and she tells her readers

Sanger's elitist bigotry was the motivation for her birth control advocacy. Looked at as a whole, Sanger's writings, speeches, and organizational connections with the eugenics movement all served the end of controlling the "unfit" – those determined by Sanger to be unable to manage their own childbearing behavior. What Sanger promulgated was an ethic of control.

In other words, Sanger became a god unto herself, capable of judging individuals who should and should not be part of the human race. Sanger rejected God. Sanger rejected love. Sanger rejected truth.

Moving into our own era, we find a Catholic commentator from MSNBC by the name of Chris Matthews. Geoffrey Dickens of NewsBusters paid very close attention to what Matthews had to say about those of us who oppose the nomination of pro-abortion Catholic Kathleen Sebelius, current governor of Kansas. Dickens wrote

On Monday night's Hardball, Chris Matthews feared KS Governor Kathleen Sebelius, in her nomination fight to head HHS, would be a target of "the terrorism of the, of the anti-abortion people." Then perhaps realizing he called all pro-lifers terrorists, Matthews feebly attempted to amend the statement, as he tried to clarify, "I mean verbal terrorism."

Thanks to Jill Stanek who remains the pro-life movement's number one blogger, you can listen to the mind-boggling Matthews yourself.

What I find curious about Matthews, who like Sanger, attempts to find problems with the "Catholic position" wherever he turns, is that he appears to be far more concerned about those of us who find factual fault with Sebelius than those who are fawning all over her even at the expense of their previous pro-life credentials.

I am speaking of Senator Sam Brownback, Catholic and a Kansan, who issued a joint statement with Kansas Senator Pat Roberts stating

Congratulations to Governor Sebelius on being nominated to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services…. It's an honor for the State of Kansas to have an elected official appointed to the president's cabinet. We are hopeful Governor Sebelius will be a voice for Kansas and rural America at the Department. We look forward to working with her on issues important to the state including a National Cancer Institute Designation at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Pardon me while I become a verbal terrorist once again so that I can point out to you that nobody forced Senator Brownback to issue a statement, regardless of political protocol! Perhaps I am being politically naïve, but so what! I am a Catholic who honestly believes that those in public office who are Catholic need to put their faith ahead of their protocol.

For as American Life League's Katie Walker pointed out in a statement given to Politico's Ben Smith, "Brownback's support for Sebelius doesn't undercut pro-lifers one bit. It certainly undercuts Brownback's credibility, not to mention the victims of abortion."

That is precisely my point. Whether it is a frontal attack on the Catholic Church and her teachings, or a public example of putting politics before principle, Matthews and his ilk are being crass. The message America is getting is that Catholics can pretty much do or say whatever they want, flaunt it in public, and then receive the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion, without batting an eye or receiving a reprimand from a bishop, priest or deacon.

And you wonder why the Church is facing an identity meltdown in America? I think there is an answer in all this that does not come from me, but from a profoundly holy priest, Father Alfonso Galvez, SICP whose writing was excerpted in the winter 2009 edition of the magazine, Latin Mass.

Turning one's back on the truth is, therefore, nothing less than turning one's back on God… If the Truth is God, and God is Love, rejection of the truth is rejection of love. So no matter what anyone may say, contempt for the truth is not so much a matter of the understanding as something to do with the option of the will. Truth is not rejected because one fails to see it, but rather because one does not want it….

It is not surprising, therefore, that man becomes a liar as soon as he turns his back on God.

This is indeed the problem the Catholic Church is facing today. This is the reason why we hope that Archbishop Chaput and each of his fellow bishops will begin firmly addressing the scandal that is being created in the Church today by those who are "comfortable" with the murder of preborn children while continuing to call themselves Catholic.

"I'm Pro-Choice"

The following was written by Father Dwight Longenecker and reposted here with permission:
I'm a pro-choice Catholic. That is to say, I'm in favor of doctors and nurses having the choice of whether they'll participate in abortions or not.

Has anybody else noticed the blatant hypocrisy of the pro-choice crowd? Choice, choice, choice, but no choice if a medical professional wants to choose not to do an abortion.

I had an email saying that on Tues. March 3, Fr. Mitch Pacwa on EWTN informed his audience that the legislature is giving the public one week to give them feedback on how they feel regarding eliminating the "conscience rights" put in by Pres. Bush.

This would mean that doctors and nurses would not be able to refuse to participate in abortions because of their religious/moral views. If they do refuse they are open to be sued. They want to see if anyone cares. Let's show them that we do!

Dear Mr President,

If you were truly pro-choice you would continue to allow doctors and nurses the choice not to participate in abortion.

Please do not remove this freedom from our health care professionals.

Work instead to guarantee the rights of hospitals and all health care professionals to make their own choice to be involved in abortion or not.

Sincerely yours,

Contact Your Senators to Oppose Pro-Abortion Sebelius' Nomination as HHS Secretary

President Obama has nominated Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, one of the most divisive elected officials in the United States, to be Secretary of the vast U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In that role, which affects every American's health, Sebelius will have chief responsibility for guiding the creation of the Obama health care plan and will oversee an annual budget of $821 billion.

As governor, Sebelius time and again failed Kansas women and families, opposing good health policies. To name just a few examples:

In 2003 and 2005, she vetoed bills that would have guaranteed the safety of abortion centers in Kansas, which were operating under medically dangerous conditions;

In 2008, she vetoed a measure to enforce the state's parental notice law so that parents could be assured an abortion would not be performed on their minor daughter without their knowledge;

Even more shocking, she recently vetoed a bill that would have required those doing late-term abortions to provide an explicit medical reason;

She likewise vetoed another bill that would have required those doing post-viability (that is, after the point when the child is developed enough to breathe on its own outside the womb) abortions to report the diagnosis that led to the abortion.

Finally, Gov. Sebelius has received massive political donations from a notorious late-term abortionist and used the Governor's Mansion to entertain both this man and the nation's leading partial-birth abortionist.

Women deserve better, patients deserve better--all Americans deserve better. It's clear that President Obama has chosen to put a radical abortion agenda ahead of the desire for reforms everyone can agreed upon. Washington Assisted Suicide Opponents Organize Citizens, Urge Doctors to Opt Out of New Law

Olympia, WA ( -- Assisted suicide opponents are continuing their efforts to organize doctors and hospitals to resist the measure state voters approved to make the state the second to legalize the practice. The Coalition Against Assisted Suicide has been working to get medical professionals to create assisted suicide free zones.

Eileen Geller and Carrie Herring tell they are hearing from Washington citizens who want to patronize doctors and medical centers committed to refusing to be involved in assisted suicides.

To that end, they are working with medical centers and staff to gain commitments that they will not be places that will agree to a patient's request for a lethal cocktail.
They say time is of the essence and that more commitments to help and not kill patients should be put into place.

"Since this life-ending law takes effect in a few weeks -- on March 4th -- we have only a very short time in which to minimize its dangerous effects," the group says.

Although the phone at CAAS has been ringing off the hook with requests for more assisted suicide free zones, the group tells there is some confusion in the medical community.

"Unfortunately, some physicians and healthcare facilities don't know that Initiative 1000 allows them to assert their right to refrain from involvement in physician-assisted suicide," they say.
The organization is asking for citizen involvement. Read the full story here.

From the Catholic League

Kansas City, Kansas Archbishop Joseph Naumann has written a column for his archdiocesan newspaper that will appear in tomorrow’s edition; to read it, click here. It is a lengthy and pointed statement concerning the nomination of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of health and human services (HHS).

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on it today:

“Left-wing Catholics who have rallied to Kathleen Sebelius’ side are now in a jam: their support pits them against her Ordinary, Archbishop Joseph Naumann. He regrets that he is not experiencing the ‘joy and pride’ he normally would of a Kansas Catholic being chosen for such a top post in a presidential administration. What troubles him, but not her Catholic supporters, is her relentless opposition to Church teaching on abortion.

“Naumann mentions that Sebelius has long been associated with organizations like Planned Parenthood and NARAL, the two most radical pro-abortion groups in the nation; they are also decidedly anti-Catholic. He mentions her willingness to accept cash from Dr. George Tiller, a man known for killing tens of thousands of unborn children, many of whom were partially born. He mentions that in her role as the head of HHS, she ‘will have to make many decisions that will in all probability continue her personal involvement in promoting legalized abortion and her cooperation in this intrinsic evil.’ (My italics.)

“It is painfully obvious that those who support Sebelius not only disagree with Archbishop Naumann’s characterization of abortion as intrinsically evil—they disagree with the teachings of the Catholic Church on this fundamental human right. The Catholic League is proud to stand with Archbishop Naumann and calls on Catholics everywhere to support him with vigor.”

'I Regret My Abortion' Message Comes to 40 Days for Life Campaign on March 10

WASHINGTON, Mar. 5 /Christian Newswire/ -- "We are highly encouraged that the Silent No More Awareness Campaign is urging women and men who have found healing in the wake of abortion to stand witness in front of abortion facilities on March 10 in connection with 40 Days for Life," said Shawn Carney, spring campaign director for 40 Days for Life. "The message of post-abortion healing plays an important role in the dismantling of the abortion culture and the construction of a new culture of life."

Women who are involved with the Silent No More Awareness Campaign will be carrying signs that read, "I regret my abortion," and men will be holding signs with the message, "I regret lost fatherhood."

The date March 10 was chosen because this is the date that the abortion industry has marked as Abortion Provider Appreciation Day. "That concept flies in the face of the destruction we know abortion causes," said Carney, "not just for the baby whose life is taken, but for the mother, the father -- and many others including extended family and friends. It is our fervent hope that women with abortion appointments on March 10 will see the silent, prayerful witness of others who have walked in their shoes, and avoid making a tragic decision that could haunt them physically, psychologically and spiritually for years and years to come." Another Breakthrough for Ethical Stem Cell Alternative

Los Angeles, CA ( -- One of the alternatives to the use of embryonic stem cells has made another advance and, this time, induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, have yielded nerve cells. Researchers made a type of nerve cells from the iPS cells, which are embryonic-like cells reverted from their adult state.

The cells are hailed by pro-life groups as an ethical alternative to the use of embryonic stem cells, which can only be obtained by destroying human life.

A team at the University of California Los Angeles was able to make motor neurons out of the induced pluripotent stem cells and the scientists hope to make cells tailored to specific diseases for therapy.

By converting the iPS cells into motor neuron cells, scientists may be able to better treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Read the full story here.

Late-Term Abortion Practitioner Tiller Will Stand Trial After Court Ruling

Wichita, KS ( -- A decision by a local judge means Kansas-based late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller will stand trial for charges that he did illegal abortions. Tiller has been accused of violating state law requiring a second, independent, physician to sign off on his late-term abortions. Read the full story here.

Senate Judiciary Committee Backs Obama's Pro-Abortion Pick for Deputy Attorney General

Washington, DC ( -- The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the nomination of David Ogden for Deputy Attorney General. The panel voted for the pro-abortion nominee President Barack Obama put forward even though pro-life groups opposed him because of his pro-abortion views. Read the full story here.

House OKs Spending Bill with UNFPA-Forced Abortion Funds, Abstinence Cuts

Washington, DC ( -- The House of Representatives wasted little time in approving the Omnibus Appropriations Bill to fund government operations for the rest of the 2009 fiscal year. The bill contains language restoring taxpayer funding of the United Nations Population Fund, which supports China's forced abortion program. The measure, H.R. 1105, contains language that would restore the money President Bush withheld from the UNFPA because of its abortion activities. Read the full story here.

H/T Pelican Project Pro-life

The following is from a recent Catholic League Alert
March 4, 2009

At the close of the Bush administration, the department of health and human services (HHS) issued regulations protecting the conscience rights of health care workers. The Obama administration is proposing to undo those rights. The person likely to enforce the new regulations is Kathleen Sebelius, the nominee for secretary of HHS.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue sees a problem:

“If Kathleen Sebelius is confirmed as the secretary for HHS, she may face a real dilemma: She may be called upon to enforce regulations that strip Catholic health-care workers of their right not to perform, or assist in performing, an abortion. She would then effectively create a dilemma for those doctors and nurses—they would either do what they are ordered to do and risk excommunication, or suffer the consequences. And given that there are more than 2,000 members of the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs alone, it is safe to say that the impending problem could explode.

“The Catholic Catechism is not ambiguous: ‘Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life.’ In other words, if Sebelius enforces regulations which deny conscience rights, she will ineluctably put herself on a collision course with the Catholic Church. Is this what the Obama administration wants?

“In 2003, Gov. Sebelius vetoed a law mandating health standards for abortion clinics in Kansas. Her reasoning? The problem with the bill, she said, was that it allowed ‘the legislature, instead of physicians and medical personnel, [to] regulate health care procedures.’ If her interest in protecting the autonomy rights of health care workers vis-à-vis the state was genuine in that instance, then surely she could invoke the same principle again and insist on conscience rights. The time to do so is now: the Obama administration is about to begin a 30-day period allowing for comment on this subject.”

The Ethic of Control: Margaret Sanger, Eugenics, and Planned Parenthood

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), despite coming under frequent attacks by pro-lifers, remains one of the most respected and well-funded organizations in the country. Add the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) to the equation, and you've got a billion-dollar industry in human fertility.

One would expect that the aims and agenda of such a huge organization would come under severe scrutiny, but Planned Parenthood has been immune from such questions, largely because its stated goals of population control and family planning are supposedly in agreement with America's interests at home and abroad. But is PPFA's stated agenda the whole story?

Washington, DC (3 March 2009) – Planned Parenthood’s darling, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, is on the fast track to appointment and confirmation as secretary of Health and Human Services – UNLESS YOU STOP IT.

Please sign the petition at

Meet Kathleen Sebelius — President’s Obama’s nominee for HHS secretary. Sebelius is the governor of Kansas, “the late-term abortion capital of the world,” has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood numerous times and has made no secret of her radical support for the abortion movement.

Indeed, she has praised, defended and treated to dinner at the governor’s mansion the notorious Dr. George Tiller – set to stand trial for committing illegal late-term abortions.

As we say in our petition, appointing Gov. Sebelius as the HHS secretary is like appointing Dr. Jack Kevorkian as Surgeon General. Kathleen Sebelius poses a huge threat to the health and well-being of every single American, particularly those marginalized by the culture of death.

Please sign the petition now and send it on to your family and friends:

Appointing Sebelius is an integral part of Obama’s plan to implement tyrannical new healthcare policies, which means a windfall of your tax dollars for Planned Parenthood. It’s time to fight back!

Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, pro-life stalwart, introduced an amendment (SA 601) to the notorious Omnibus Appropriations Bill (H.R. 1105) yesterday that prevents Planned Parenthood from Receiving Title X funds.

This is the first time an amendment seeking to take money away from Planned Parenthood, by name, has ever been introduced in the Senate! US Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana introduced the same amendment in the 110th Congress to the Health and Human Services Appropriations Bill in the House of Representatives.

Please contact your senators by calling the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request.

The Vitter Amendment (SA 601) simply states, “None of the funds appropriated under this Act shall be made available to Planned Parenthood for any purpose under title X of the Public Health Service Act.”

Title X funding is a "family planning" appropriations program under the Public Health Service Act. Planned Parenthood receives over 70 million of Title X dollars each year for the distribution of abortifacient birth control and other sex products.

Your tax dollars have been used to make Planned Parenthood the nation’s largest abortion chain. It’s time for us to stand up with Senator Vitter and say NO MORE!!!

Please call your Senators and let them know what you think about the Vitter Amendment (SA 601) being added to the Omnibus Bill (HR 1105).

In this time of economic recession, Americans cannot afford to be lining the pockets of such a disreputable business. It’s time to fight back. Defund Planned Parenthood of its Title X funding by calling your senator NOW!
