Catholic Notre Dame University to Give Obama Honorary Degree on May 17, Against USCCB Policy

White House Secretary Robert Gibbs stated today that President Obama will give the commencement address at Notre Dame University this year. The school confirmed the announcement, stating on its website that Obama will also receive an honorary doctor of laws degree at the University's 164th University Commencement Ceremony at 2 p.m. May 17 in the Joyce Center on campus.

In 2004, the United States of Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved a policy statement called "Catholics in Political Life," which says, with reference to pro-abortion politicians, "They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

President Obama has been called the "abortion president" by pro-life activists, and his appearance at the university would appear to violate the USCCB's policy against honoring pro-abortion politicians.

Pro-Life Leader Calls on Notre Dame to Cancel Obama Commencement Address

Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League and its national director are calling on Notre Dame University President, Rev. John Jenkins, to withdraw his invitation to Barack Obama to deliver a commencement address there on May 17.

“Over the first two months of his administration, Barack Obama has established himself as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history,” said League National Director Joe Scheidler, himself a graduate of Notre Dame, a Catholic university. “My alma mater should not be providing a platform for this president.”

The Stem Cell Sham

When a Democratic president goes from being wrong to being damn wrong is always an interesting moment: Bay of Pigs, Great Society, Jimmy Carter waking up on the morning after his inauguration, HillaryCare. Barack Obama condemned himself (and a number of human embryos to be determined at a later date) on March 9 when he signed an executive order reversing the Bush administration's restrictions on federal funding of stem cell research.

President Obama went to hell not with the stroke of a pen, but with the cluck of a tongue. His executive order was an error. His statement at the executive order signing ceremony was a mortal error: "In recent years, when it comes to stem cell research, rather than furthering discovery, our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values..."

Pope Ignites Condom Debate

March 18, 2009

On his flight to Cameroon yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI was asked about the Catholic Church’s position on fighting AIDS. He said, in part, “One cannot overcome the problem with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue had this to say:

“Last year, Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, wrote that ‘In every African country in which HIV infections declined, this decline has been associated with a decrease in the proportion of men and women reporting more than one sex partner over the course of a year—which is exactly what fidelity programs promote.’ As for condom use, Green said, ‘Many countries that have not seen declines in HIV have seen increases in condom use, but in every country worldwide in which HIV has declined there have been increases in levels of faithfulness and usually abstinence as well.’ The Catholic Church, it is well known, has been at the forefront of such programs. It also operates more hospitals and related medical centers for AIDS patients than any other private institution in the world.

“If condoms were the answer, then why is it that New York City, which under Mayor Michael Bloomberg has given away tens of millions of free condoms, has an HIV rate three times the national average? Furthermore, the promiscuous distribution of condoms in New York has coincided with a spike in sexually transmitted diseases of all sorts. Isn’t it time we learned that condom worship is irrational?

“Anyone who thinks that condom distribution, education and/or research is going to solve a problem which is mostly a function of behavioral recklessness is positively clueless. Not only that, such persons unwittingly contribute to the problem by diverting attention and resources away from that which works.”

President Barack Obama Makes First Pro-Abortion Judicial Pick in David Hamilton

President Barack Obama has nominated his first pro-abortion judicial candidate as he named David Hamilton as his first Appeals Court nominee. Hamilton is a former Clinton nominee whom Obama has appointed to serve on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Hamilton was initially appointed by President Clinton to a district judgeship in Indiana in 1994 even though the ABA gave him a “not qualified” rating...

Courageous Mother Delays Chemotherapy Treatment for Cancer, Saves Lives of Twins

Mom of Twins
While some doctors routinely offer abortion in the case of women who are pregnant and facing cancer treatments, one British housewife has demonstrated that it is not always necessary to make such a difficult situation into a death sentence for the unborn child. Rachel Crossland, a British housewife and mother of six who had been diagnosed with cancer, refused chemotherapy and radiation treatment when she was informed she was 13 weeks pregnant with twins.

The Daily Mail reports that Mrs. Crossland was about to undergo surgery for a malignant tumour on her bladder when she found out she was pregnant. Mrs. Crossland said that doctors pressured her to have her children killed via abortion, saying, "The doctors told me lots of horror stories of what would happen to the babies if I had the treatment while pregnant and I was mortified"...

The President of the Association for Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists THE FRONTAL ASSAULT ON OUR CONSCIENCE RIGHTS HAS BEGUN

Received today via email.
March 13, 2009

Dear Colleagues:
This is probably the most crucial letter we have written to you.

On Tuesday, March 10, the Obama Administration officially began the process of rescinding the HHS Regulations written specifically to protect your right as a health care provider to not be forced to perform or refer for abortions. These HHS regulations were written in part because of the urgent need for prolife obgyns to be protected from the pro-abortion activism of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as expressed in Ethics Statement # 385.

The HHS Regulations are a summary of several statutes which Congress passed over the past three decades‹the Church amendments, the Hoekstra-Coates law, and most recently the Hyde-Weldon law passed in 2004. These statutes were designed to protect provider conscience rights. The HHS regulation simply clarifies the existing laws, which declare that American tax dollars will not fund programs in which healthcare professionals are fired, penalized or otherwise subjected to discrimination because of their ethical stance related to performing or referring for abortion, and other morally controversial issues.

Abortion advocates are misrepresenting the HHS Regulations as threatening the lives of women who will die because they can't get emergency abortions, and arguing that women won't be able to get contraception. These are absurd arguments, and have nothing to do with the actual statues cited, or with the wording of the HHS Regulations.

Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates are also arguing that if doctors and other health care professionals are not forced to perform or refer for abortions, access to health care services for women will be restricted. In reality, many health care providers will leave the industry altogether if forced to violate their moral convictions, thereby reducing access to health care services across the board.

In addition, without the conscience protection regulation, providers opposed to participating in abortion remain susceptible to intolerance and coercion from employers with conflicting beliefs, and to possible lawsuits from outside organizations.

Last week, the Office of Management and Budget announced they were reviewing a proposal to repeal the rule. Starting Tuesday, March 10, the American people have 30 days to voice their opinions on the matter.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER WRITTEN AN EMAIL IN YOUR LIFE, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO IT!! We are asking any healthcare professional or lay person to comment. We have made it very easy for you. See below:

Go to Freedom2Care. This is a centralized website sponsored by many different organizations (of which AAPLOG is one) who have joined together to battle the attack on our Rights of Conscience.

Click on "My Message as a Healthcare Professional." (or "My Message as a Patient" if you are a patient) The letter is written for you. (or you can write your own in the empty box at the bottom of the page.)
Next, fill in the contact information that is requested
Next, skip the "comment box" unless you want to write your own letter.
Next, enter the characters asked for in the small box at right.
Next, hit "submit." You are finished. Thank you for doing this!

It is very important that you respond. This may be your last chance to save your right to refuse to be involved in abortions.
Please pass this email on to your colleagues. Without a huge response from concerned health care professionals over the next 30 days, your legal right to refuse to be involved with abortions may soon disappear.

Campaign to Target Abortion Advocates in 2010 Election Gets Pro-Life Push Now

by Steven Ertelt, Editor
March 11, 2009

Washington, DC ( -- One of the leading pro-life groups involved in political activities has launched a new campaign to target abortion advocates in the 2010 election. The Susan B. Anthony List has hired a former member of Congress to head the campaign to take back Congress from pro-abortion lawmakers.

The new project SBA List project, called “Votes Have Consequences," will feature pro-life former Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, who lose her bid for re-election to her northern Colorado seat last year.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the group, told about the significance of the new effort.

She says it is no Parthian shot, but a pro-active effort to restore a pro-life majority to Congress so more laws can be approved that help women and save lives. She says the actions of Obama and his pro-abortion friends on Capitol Hill make it so pro-life advocates need to get started now thinking about 2010.

“What is taking place in the stem cell arena this week is proof that those of us involved in upholding pro-life initiatives need to quickly move forward with definitive strategic plans to go on the offense in order to protect the unborn," she said.

"Our announcement this week is one that we are very excited about and pro-life Americans will be extremely pleased with the news," she added.

Musgrave talked with CBN News about the need for a pro-active pro-life election project like the one SBA List is sponsoring.

"Votes do have consequence and this project is going to make sure we are not always on the defensive," she said.

Musgrave indicated the project will focus on pro-abortion members of Congress elected in districts like hers were the majority of voters take a pro-life position.

"We're going into districts where individuals are vulnerable and we're just going to make sure people know how these individuals have voted and what their record is," she said.

"We're going to be assertive. We're going to be aggressive and this is a new day in politics for the pro-life movement," Musgrave added.

The SBA List has not yet identified which members of Congress will be targeted for defeat because of their abortion advocacy, but the group plans ambitious advertising campaigns combining television, print, radio and Internet.

The group won't wait for 2010 to come but will start highlighting offensive votes now, CBN News indicates.

Abstinence Education Advocates Lobby Congress, Obama Considers Funding Cuts

by Steven Ertelt, Editor
March 11, 2009

Washington, DC ( -- Backers of abstinence education are lobbying Congress today as President Barack Obama considers more cuts in funding the programs. The National Abstinence Education Association is meeting with members of Congress and their staff to convince them the programs are helpful.

The group is also bringing nearly 500 teenagers to Capitol Hill to help with the efforts and the response has pleasantly surprised organizers.

“We knew that this message resonated with teens, but this response has been overwhelming and indicates the strong support abstinence education has among American youth, schools and parents," Valerie Huber, director of the NAEA, said.

The event comes as pro-abortion members of Congress are pressuring Obama to cut funds for abstinence education. Read the full article here.

President Barack Obama Picks Pro-Abortion Tina Tchen to Run Women's Council

by Steven Ertelt, Editor
March 11, 2009

Washington, DC ( -- When voters head to the polls to cast a vote for president, their votes have a far-reaching effect on the issue of abortion. That's because of the lesser-known appointments presidents make that have under-the-radar impact on the abortion debate -- such as the pro-abortion selection Obama made today.

President Barack Obama signed an executive order today establishing a new agency within his administration known as the White House Council on Women and Girls.

Obama said the council would be headed by longtime friend and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, whom he had asked embattled former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to name as his replacement in the Senate.

More importantly, Obama's director of public liaison at the White House, Tina Tchen, will server as the group's executive director and run the council on a day-to-day basis.

Tchen is a Chicago lawyer who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Obama presidential campaign. Previously, she served as the vice president of the National Organization for Women, a prominent pro-abortion organization.

Why does the appointment matter much when it comes to the abortion debate?

The new council has as its mandate the goal to make sure that all federal laws and federal agencies examine how their policies and actions affect women. With a director who thinks abortion is a good thing for women, the Obama administration will press for more federal rules and policies promoting abortions.

“We need to take a hard look at where we're falling short,” Obama said at the announcement ceremony today.

For pro-life advocates, naming the pro-abortion Tchen as the director of an agency devoted to the interests of women is yet another example of how Obama is falling short when it comes to pro-life issues.

Today's announcement comes on the heels of Obama announcing the creation of a new foreign policy position to focus on women's issues.

Melanne Verveer, an abortion advocate who served as chief of staff to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, will occupy the new post and serve as a United States ambassador.

Her role as the new Obama ambassador to women abroad? Promote abortion and overturn pro-life laws in nations across the world.

President Obama to Nominate Pro-Abortion Margaret Hamburg as FDA Director

Washington, DC ( -- President Barack Obama plans to nominate former New York City Health Commissioner Margaret Hamburg as the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Hamburg served as assistant HHS secretary during the Clinton administration and has been a key abstinence education opponent.

Hamburg takes a pro-abortion position and ran New York City's abortion counseling and family-planning centers for former mayor Rudy Giuliani. The nation's largest city is also the location of one of the highest abortion rates in the country. Read the full article here.

Illinois House Committee Approves Radical FOCA-Style Bill, Pro-Lifers Rally

Springfield, IL ( -- An Illinois state House committee has signed off on a bill that is similar to the so-called Freedom of Choice Act that pro-life advocates are rallying against in Congress. Pro-life supporters schedule meeting with White House

WASHINGTON - Christian groups that oppose abortion are preparing to meet next week with the head of President Barack Obama's Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

The president of Concerned Women for America, Wendy Wright, says she arranged the meeting with Joshua DuBois to discuss two of Obama's stated goals for the office: reducing the need for abortion and encouraging responsible fatherhood.

Wright says she'll be joined by representatives of the Family Research Council, the Christian Medical and Dental Association and Care Net pregnancy centers, which help women with unplanned pregnancies have their babies and care for them.

Wright says she won't ask for money, but wants to show DuBois programs that succeed at reducing abortion. She says government funding for abortion only encourages more of them.

Orange County cuts Planned Parenthood purse strings

Courtesy of

Orange County Supervisors in California have sent a strong message to Planned Parenthood.

The county has money to distribute to nonprofit operations from a past tobacco lawsuit settlement. Supervisor Chris Norby says the board discovered part of the money was going to the strongest abortion business in the country.

"We did vote to suspend the contract to the Planned Parenthood portion of it because of their involvement in abortion because the feeling was that the other organizations did not provide abortions, were mostly disseminators of information, but Planned Parenthood has special baggage because of that mission," he notes.

Planned Parenthood will have to look elsewhere for money, according to Norby. "They're free to do it," he points out. "It is legal, but it doesn't mean that it has to be subsidized at taxpayer's expense and that's what the issue was that we were dealing with."

The supervisors announced their unanimous agreement. "The board did make a statement. It was a five-to-zero vote that this particular relationship would not continue," Norby concludes.

Alert: healthcare provider rights of conscience regs to be rescinded. Act now!

Dear Pro-Life Advocates,

Healthcare provider Rights of Conscience are going, going, and could be gone. Our presidential administration intends to rescind the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regulations we fought so hard for last fall and for the first time put teeth into Right of Conscience laws. Right of Conscience is guaranteed in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights (Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof), however, the present laws are being ignored since there is no provision to enforce them.

Pro-abortion groups are attempting to force healthcare professionals to participate in activities to which they are morally opposed or leave medicine altogether. These regulations are needed more than ever. I ask you to speak out now before it is too late!

You have until April 9 to make public comments to HHS and encourage others to do so, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical office staff, and patients. No time to write a letter or not sure what to say? Good news, we make it easy for you to speak out! Read on.

The Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) has organized the Freedom2Care coalition, to fight for the rights of healthcare providers not participate in abortions or other activities that violate their consciences. Coalition members include the Family Research Council, Concerned Women of America, the Catholic Church, Alliance Defense Fund, National Right to Life, The Christian Legal Society and others are joining daily.

Freedom2Care is working to protect the new federal HHS “provider conscience” regulation; to educate and persuade the public, policy makers and the medical community regarding conscience rights; and to expose and undermine the abortion-mandate ideology of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Planned Parenthood and other abortion lobbyists as unethical and detrimental to patients.

Here is what you need to do:
1. Go to now.
2. Send a comment to HHS by clicking the "Healthcare professionals" or "Patients" link at the top as it applies to you. You can send a form letter or write one.
3. Learn more about the issue at this site. Find resources to equip you to educate others.
4. Also sign the petition on the site that will be forwarded to Congress and the White House.
5. If you have one, tell your own story of discrimination or being pressured to violate your conscience. Stories are worth their weight in gold! If you have been discriminated against or pressured to violate your conscience please tell CMDA by sending an e-mail to CMDA is putting together audio and video resources to tell your stories. Stories are a dramatic tool that demonstrates the need for these regulations.

This is more than the issue of abortion. Should we force pacifists to kill or doctors to participate in executions? What about forcing them to participate in physician-assisted suicide where it is legalized? There is much more information on Act now, don't delay.

Letter to the Editor - Stem Cell Research

For those letter writers who think family members will now have a chance of healing with embryonic stem cells, there is good news. Non-embryonic cells have already been successful in treating MS, Parkinson’s, cirrhosis of the liver, cerebral palsy, heart disease, meniscus repair, windpipe reconstruction, and many more. There are now over 70 conditions that have been treated with adult stem cells or umbilical cord blood cells including patients in Hawaii (Star-Bulletin, June 2, 2008). Scientists have now created embryo-like stem cells in the lab without killing human embryos.

President Obama has eliminated restrictions on using our taxes to fund embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) and has elevated politics over science. Given the successes of ethically derived stem cells, why would there be such a push for federal tax funds.

If ESCR had such wonderful prospects, why wouldn’t private funds from pharmaceuticals be flowing into it? There are over 2000 FDA-approved clinical trials underway with adult stem cell tissues.

ESCR is funded by lies and represents another attack on the humanity of the unborn - a necessity to justify “abortion rights.”

Bait and Switch - Would You Buy a Used Teleprompter From This Man

Bait and Switch
Part One of Two
By Dave Andrusko

Editor's note. Part Two asks, Would You Buy a Used Teleprompter From This Man?" Be sure to post these TN&V on your social networking pages by going to NRLC News and Views and clicking on the "Share" button.

It always fascinates me what finally drives people so far up the wall that all the pent-up frustrations come crashing out. Some cases are easy to understand. When a company that has received more than $170 billion in bailout money from the government gives executives $165 million in bonuses, everyone understandably goes ballistic.

But how about a more select group--"self-identified centrist or moderate evangelicals"--who sold out to then-candidate Barack Obama for a mess of indigestible pottage? To switch metaphors, is it possible that President Obama's unrelentingly pro-abortion agenda is finally beginning to cause the scales to fall from their eyes?

Let's consider what Prof. David P. Gushee wrote in Monday's USA Today. Gushee, described as distinguished university professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University and president of Evangelicals for Human Rights, tells the reader he was part of that group of "centrist or moderate evangelicals" which "built a friendly relationship with Barack Obama and rejected the Christian right's vilification of him."

(Parenthetically, choosing not to be willfully blind to Obama's anti-life record, or his amazingly insensitive statements at Pastor Rick Warren's candidate forum, and/or his joined-at-the-hip association with Planned Parenthood does not equal "vilification." It's called discernment.)

So, what did candidate Obama use as bait as he trolled in the waters of "centrist or moderate evangelicals"? According to Gushee, it consisted of three components.

Obama reached out to them early in his candidacy (which no doubt flattered them); promised "transformational leadership" (as meaningless as it is pseudo-profound); and cast the issues net more widely (i.e., took positions that were "more consistent with broadly pro-life and pro-justice Christian values than the standard Republican alternative").

But what closed the deal, I suspect, was that "his party's platform also promised a commitment to abortion-reduction efforts, and he has echoed that language." Proving that hope is still alive, Gushee adds, "Some of us continue to dream that he will roll out a major abortion-reduction initiative."

And so, like the guy who refuses to leave the craps table, he has kept rolling and rolling the dice, hoping to hit "the big payoff"--a "serious abortion-reduction initiative that I could wholeheartedly support." Which is why, we can conclude, he pretty much kept quiet while Obama took what can only be described as "typical Democratic positions on abortion-related issues."

But instead of rolling sevens, Gushee kept coming up snake eyes. He reiterates the litany of Obama's anti-life initiatives--reversing Mexico City, a slew of militantly pro-abortion appointees (although Gushee mentions only one), declaring open season on human embryos, and launching an assault on the conscience clause that allows physicians and others to keep completely away from abortion.

Coercing consciences and conscripting taxpayer dollars for the domestic and international Planned Parenthood types seems to have unnerved Gushee. His final comment is, "President Obama, we need more than lip service on these crucial issues. Bring the transformational change your promises led us to hope for."

Talk about missing the point. Obama is attempting to bring "transformational change" on abortion. It takes the form of obliterating every pro-life gain, no matter how small, no matter how widely it is supported by the public, and no matter how much it has accomplished exactly what Obama says he wants--to "reduce the number of abortions." And for good measure, his "transformational change" would also include ensconcing the anti-life ethos in health care "reform."

Obama lured in these folks with a classic bait and switch. He needed them, for obvious reasons. They needed, for their own reasons, to believe in his bogus crypto-assurances.

Let's hope, for their sakes and the sake of unborn children, they wake up before it is too late.

International Planned Parenthood is after Poland

Less than two months after Barack Obama rescinded the Mexico City policy, the International Planned Parenthood Federation is going after Poland and putting on the pressure to provide more abortions and contraception.

Why Poland? Look at the numbers. The number of abortions has lowered in the country since 1990. In 1990, there were a total of 59,417 abortions and in the year 2006, Poland had a total of 340 abortions.

IPPF states that the women in Poland should have:

...easy access to contraception; abolishing the gender role stereotypes that people are socialized into; right to decide about oneself and one's body; no more treating women as sexual objects; proper sex education in schools; and treating equally women who are elderly, poor, homosexual, of different ethnicity, of low social standing or handicapped.

As we reported back in 2002, IPPF was complaining loudly due to President Bush’s reinstatement of the Mexico City policy and now it appears that IPPF is going to do as much as it can to make abortion on-demand. It has even published a letter on its web site, dated March 6, where it discussed an event called “Women’s Day.” This is where IPPF planned to push its agenda onto the women present as well as making a lot of noise against the bioethics committee.

What can you do? Continue to fight PP here in our country by getting rid of its taxpayer’s dollars, clinics and sex education programs. The more we do to change our own nation can help prevent our very own president from making laws to further the abortion business in our country and other countries. You can also sign the petition to stop PP’s agenda at: STOPP.

Georgia State House Passes Embryo Adoption Bill to Protect Unborn Children

by Steven Ertelt, Editor
March 13, 2009

Atlanta, GA ( -- The Georgia state House, on Thursday, passed what some are considering one of the nation's first embryo adoption bill. The chamber approved HB 388, the Option of Adoption Act by a vote of 96- 66 to help offer protection for unique human beings who are stored in fertility clinics.

This bill allows for embryos that are currently in cryopreservation to have the legal right to adoption as human beings in accordance with Georgia child adoption laws. This bill also ensures that the adoption of human embryos will no longer be carried out as a form of contract or property law. HB 388 helps to clarify the rights of genetic and adoptive parents and promotes the best interest of the child.

Daniel Becker, the president of Georgia Right to Life, told, "This bill is monumental in that it establishes the adoption of embryos as children for adoption purposes. You donate property, but you adopt persons. We are excited that we are one step closer to establishing embryo adoption as law in Georgia," he continued.

Becker says that, with the creation of in vitro fertilization (IVF), 500,000 human embryos have been conceived and stored in laboratories across the United States. Read full article here.

Pro-Life Republicans Still Smarting From Michael Steele's Comments on Abortion

by Steven Ertelt, Editor
March 12, 2009

Washington, DC ( -- The comments national Republican Party chairman Michael Steele made to a magazine that made it seem like he was watering down his pro-life views are still causing heartburn for pro-life advocates. Steele made it appear he supported abortion and backed overturning Roe by not wanting a Human Life Amendment.

The Republican Party has taken a pro-life position for decades backing the amendment to provide legal protection for unborn children. Steele's comments came in an interview with GQ magazine and he said in a statement afterwards that he had misspoken and that his remains firmly pro-life. But, that hasn't quelled the controversy.

Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate called Steele's remarks "very troubling" and, despite his clarification, "the party stands to lose many of its members and a great deal of its support in the trenches of grass-roots politic."

“For Chairman Steele to even infer that taking a life is totally left up to the individual is not only a reversal of Republican policy and principle, but it's a violation of the most basic of human rights — the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," he said.

Some pro-life Republicans are calling for Steele to resign from his position and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who ran against him for the RNC chairmanship, echoed the feelings of many pro-life activists within the party. “Chairman Steele needs to reread the Bible, the U.S. Constitution and the 2008 GOP Platform,” said Blackwell, according to Politico. “He then needs to get to work or get out of the way.”

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, also worries about the effect Steele's comments will have on the Republican Party, especially at a time when more opposition to pro-abortion President Barack Obama is needed. "This only serves to reinforce the belief by many social conservatives that one major party is unfriendly to their values while the other gives only lip service to core moral issues," he said.

"If such a visible Republican leader continues in this same vein, I'm sure many more will drop their affiliation with the GOP," he concluded. "The prospects of more social conservatives leaving may excite the 'big tenters,' but that will only last until they discover the Big Tent is empty."
