Missouri works to dodge abortion funding in healthcare bill

Scott RuppA Missouri lawmaker is taking action to block possible federal abortion mandates that accompany the much-debated healthcare bill.

Republican State Senator Scott Rupp has introduced a bill that would protect his state from abortion mandates proposed in healthcare reform. He explains that the method of doing so is in accord with the U.S. Constitution.

"We're using the legal approach that we have within our states and within some of the provisions in the proposed federal health bill, so we do know that this is constitutional," he assures. "We do know that we do have the right to do this as a state, and this is the avenue in which we can block taxpayer funds being used to fund abortions if these health exchanges are created."
