Western Nations Continue to Pressure Nicaragua on Abortion Laws

(NEW YORK – C-FAM) At the recently concluded session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Nicaragua came up against intense and concerted international pressure from fellow United Nations (UN) member states over the abortion ban the Latin American country’s National Assembly adopted unanimously into law four years ago.

Despite promising initial evidence that the prohibition on abortion has helped lower maternal mortality rates, Nicaragua has been the target of international pressure and scrutiny from UN agencies, donor governments and non-governmental organizations.

The Despicable "Family Guy" Hate Piece

Few things have ever moved me to rage as deeply as the injustice of the judicial execution of our beloved Terri Schindler Schiavo in 2005. The drama leading up to her unwarranted killing had all the barbarism of the brutal war on unborn babies with all its deceitful propaganda and murderous manipulation. Of course we expect that this is the way pagan killers operate, but we don't have to sit back and let it take over our culture. As we approach the 5th anniversary of Terri's death on March 31st, we now face a new outrage that has been perpetrated by the forces of evil that inhabit Secular City.

Last Sunday's prime time cartoon "Family Guy" episode renewed a malicious defamation of Terri's dignity and suffering. I say "renewed" because calumnies and mockery were rampant in the media when she was being executed. The "Family Guy" show featured a mindless group of children on stage acting out a mocking play about the person and manner of Terri's death referring to her with vicious epithets. I almost couldn't watch the few minutes that it took for them to shame to the depths of hell the sanctity of her life and death. I am not going to describe to you the hate-filled scene; you can look at it on the link if you wish, but suffice it to say, this kind of hate speech will never be called to task by the regulatory agencies of the pagan administration in power right now. Decent people like you and me have to object to it...

Health and care in America | Sheila Liaugminas | Friday, 26 March 2010

What went down in the House of Representatives last weekend was politics first and healthcare - well, let’s see.

Nearly everybody agreed that health care reform was badly needed and long overdue in the U.S. That’s where agreement ended. Politics took over as competing views of ethical and moral medicine in America collided in the halls of Congress and in public debates over months of townhall meetings centered on how government is functioning, and what constitutes the common good.

Leaving aside the “Obama can do nothing good” and the “Republicans are the party of NO” arguments, the story of what happened in American health care this week and what it means going forward deserves good scrutiny. Read more.

When pretense masquerades as virtue

Bart Stupak's abortion misstep

By Kathleen Parker
Chicago Tribune

Etymology: Eponym for Rep. Bart Stupak.

Function: verb

1: In a legislative process, to obstruct passage of a proposed law on the basis of a moral principle (i.e. protecting the unborn), accumulating power in the process, then at a key moment surrendering in exchange for a fig leaf, the size of which varies according to the degree of emasculation of said legislator and/or as a reflection of just how stupid people are presumed to be. (Slang: backstabber.)

Poor Bart Stupak. The man tried to be a hero for the unborn, and then, when all the power of the moment was in his frail human hands, he dropped the baby.

Now, in the wake of his decision to vote "yes" for a health care bill that expands public funding for abortion, he is vilified and will be forever remembered as the guy who Stupaked health care reform and the pro-life movement. Read more.

What Could Have Been?

Tiny little fingers
and tiny little toes
What she could have been
only heaven knows

Growing in the safety
of her hiding place
A beautiful little head
and a precious little face

Yawning and stretching
and kicking around
Moving and responding
to her mother’s sound

A future chemist
or an astronaut in space
Someone to cure cancer
for the human race

A wonderful mind
that could have found
answers to the questions
that have kept us bound

A precious life
so quickly is gone
And now we’re reaping
the death we’ve sown

To take her life
is a horrible sin
And it’s sad to think
What could have been?

The unstoppable expansion of justifications of euthanasia

For millennia, euthanasia (a word I use to include assisted suicide) has been considered morally and legally unjustifiable. People who oppose euthanasia still believe it's inherently wrong – it can't be morally justified and even compassionate motives don't make it ethically acceptable.

But what are the attitudes of pro-euthanasia advocates regarding whether its use needs to be justified, were it to be legalized? And, if justifications are required, what are they?

Good and Evil in the Health Care Outcome

...Despite all efforts, President Obama and the Democrat leadership succeeded in convincing enough of their own caucus to vote for their last-ditch effort to overhaul America’s health care sector...

... let’s look at the bad. And it is bad:

1. The Democrat leadership, on the whole, got their way. They got a bill, and they harassed their own caucus to get them to blink first. This bill is not good for Americans, will not achieve what it claims to do, and will, both in the short and long run, hurt the quality of health care in America, and gravely endanger the vulnerable unborn.

2. Stupak betrayed us. I do not say this lightly. His final vote constituted 100% of his “value” to the pro-life cause on this issue. And that vote was 100% for a bill he claimed for weeks was written in a way he could not support without violating his pro-life principles. Even if the Executive Order were to accomplish what he claims it will accomplish (a claim I highly doubt and will actively look into next), it does not exonerate him from the choice he made to vote this bill into law.

3. Liberal Catholics, catholyc groups, and even isolated leaders of liberal religious women’s orders, betrayed the bishops of the United States and smashed the possibility of a unified Catholic witness to the world on this paramount issue. Just like these organizations, leaders and their “brand” of Catholic thinking delivered to President Obama a majority of Catholic voters in this country during the presidential election, they helped him deliver – perhaps to a higher degree than any other group – the President’s “signature” legislation. If Catholics are to positively shape the world according to Catholic principles as revealed by Christ and his Church, we must set our own house in order first.

4. The strong possibility of an authentic pro-life coalition emerging in the Democrat party suffered a serious, if not insurmountable setback. I’m not saying they’re are not pro-life Democrats remaining in the House (a friend of mine counts 8 out of their entire caucus) … I’m saying this pro-life coalition has destroyed its credibility as any threat to the Democrat leadership’s agenda. When the chips were down, Pelosi and her friends browbeat the pro-life Democrats into submission.

Father Paul Marx: Prophecies of Humanae Vitae

Only a few days before he died, Father Paul Marx returned to the topic that had so often occupied him during his long decades as a pro-life missionary, namely, the great encyclical Humanae Vitae. He sent me this short article, in which he underlines the accuracy of Pope Paul VI's predictions about what would happen if conception became prevalent in society. We send it out now both because it contains timeless truths, and also to honor our Founder and long-time Chairman, Fr. Marx, who has gone to be with the Father.

Steven W. Mosher

Prophecies of Humanae Vitae

by Fr. Paul Marx, OSB

On July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI's Humanae Vitae re-affirmed the Catholic teaching on life, love and human sexuality. In that document, he listed the consequences of life lived outside Catholic teaching.

He predicted that:

1. Contraception would lead to conjugal infidelity.

2. Contraceptive practice would lead to a “general lowering of morality.”

3. Contraception would lead men to cease respecting woman in their totality and would cause them to treat women as “mere instruments of selfish enjoyment” rather than as cherished partners.

4. And finally, widespread acceptance of contraception by couples would lead to a massive imposition of contraception by unscrupulous governments.

In other words, Pope Paul VI predicted that contraception would evolve from “a lifestyle choice” into a weapon of mass destruction. How dreadfully his prophecy has been vindicated by population control and coercive sterilization programs, fertility reduction quotas and the promotion of abortion literally everywhere in the world.

Contraception's destruction of the integrity of the marital act—as unitive and procreative—has dire consequences for society and for our souls. Contraception, in other words, is a rejection of God's view of reality. It is a wedge driven into the most intimate sphere of communion known to man outside of the Holy Sacrament of the Mass. It is a degrading poison that withers life and love both in marriage and in society.

By breaking the natural and divinely ordained connection between sex and procreation, women and men—but especially men—would focus on the hedonistic possibilities of sex. People would cease seeing sex as something that was intrinsically linked to new life and to the sacrament of marriage.

Does anyone doubt that this is where we find ourselves today?

WASHINGTON -- (Sunday, March 21, 2010, 6 PM EDT) -- In response to today's announcement regarding an agreement between Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mi.) and President Obama on the pending health care bill (H.R. 3590), the following statement was issued by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of right-to-life organizations in the 50 states:

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) remains strongly opposed to the Senate-passed health bill (H.R. 3590). A lawmaker who votes for this bill is voting to require federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortion, and voting to undermine longstanding pro-life policies in other ways as well. Pro-life citizens nationwide know that this is a pro-abortion bill. Pro-life citizens know, and they will be reminded again and again, which lawmakers deserve their gratitude for voting against this pro-abortion legislation.

The executive order promised by President Obama was issued for political effect. It changes nothing. It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions in the bill. The president cannot amend a bill by issuing an order, and the federal courts will enforce what the law says.

To elaborate: The order does not truly correct any of the seven objectionable pro-abortion provisions described in NRLC's March 19 letter to the House of Representatives, which is posted here:

Regarding Community Health Centers (CHCs), NRLC has documented the problem created by H.R. 3590 here:

Prof. Robert Destro, a professor of law and former dean of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, and an expert on abortion-related litigation, has sent lawmakers a letter explaining why the bill opens the door to direct federal funding of abortion in Community Health Centers:

Prof. Destro clearly explains why it is the statutory language that will govern.

Regarding the new program to provide tax credits to purchase private insurance, the executive order merely tinkers with the formalities of a bookkeeping scheme under which federal subsidies will pay for plans that cover elective abortion -- a break from the longstanding principles of the Hyde Amendment.

The order does nothing at all to mitigate the other abortion-related problems described in the NRLC letter, dealing with bill provisions that create dangerous regulatory mandate authorities, revise Indian health programs, and create pools of directly appropriated funds that are not covered by existing restrictions on funding of abortion. Nor can the order correct the omission from the pending legislation of the necessary conscience-protection language that had been included in House-passed health care legislation last November (the "Weldon language").

For additional information regarding the abortion-related components of the legislation, and NRLC's assessment of the gravity of these issues, please refer to the March 19 letter linked above, and other materials posted on the NRLC website at

For Immediate Release: March 21, 2010

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle issued the following statement following passage of health care legislation tonight by the United States Congress:

“The health care legislation approved by the House tonight will force Hawai‘i and all the other states into a one-size-fits-all program that is financially unsustainable.

“The $1.2 trillion government takeover of health care will cost Hawai‘i residents, conservatively, an estimated $300 million over five years in added costs to our Medicaid programs, which are already hemorrhaging red ink. This legislation will impose new taxes totaling $569.2 billion that will burden Americans for generations to come. It will also raise premiums, necessitate the rationing of health care, impede economic growth and job creation as well as require cuts to Medicare.

“Governors across the country have consistently stated that states need the flexibility to adjust their Medicaid programs so they can deliver quality health care to patients at a reasonable and sustainable price.

“Hawai‘i has already undertaken health care reforms. Specifically, our QUEST Medicaid program, which the federal government estimates has saved nearly $700 million by instituting cost-efficiency measures, provides quality health care to low-income men, women and children.

“Hawai‘i needs the freedom to continue these reforms. We don’t need restrictions in the form of unfunded federal mandates.

“This bill was passed in spite of the majority opinion of the American people. It was passed by making backroom deals with Congressional leaders that will ultimately cost the American taxpayer billions of dollars. While politics encompasses the art of compromise, this bill secured the ‘yea’ votes behind closed doors, without regard to the long-term economic impact and the overwhelming opposition by many citizens from Hawai‘i and across the nation to many of its provisions.

“It will be some time before the American public sees exactly what is in this bill that contains more than 2,000 pages. Even the House Speaker admitted last week, ‘we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.’ This legislation does not represent responsible government, nor does it serve the best interest of the American people or the people of Hawai‘i.”

Susan B. Anthony List Email:

Nancy Pelosi and her allies are currently negotiating with key pro-life Democrats to try and secure their vote for their pro-abortion health care plan.

What's on the negotiating table?

A proposed executive order from President Obama that would allegedly bar abortion funding in the health care bill.

An executive order is an ineffective maneuver and completely unacceptable.

Here's why:

1. An executive order can be rescinded any time. President Obama could reverse it next week, next month, or next year. Should another pro-abortion president be elected in the future, it could be rescinded on inauguration day.

2. An executive order will not prevent insurance companies that provide abortion from participating in the exchanges.

3. Abortion funding in the health care legislation can be only be removed using the legislative process. An executive order not only doesn't fix the problem, it isn't needed to fix the problem, and could not stand a legal challenge. If Democrats are serious about protecting taxpayers from funding abortion in the health care bill, they must use the legislative process to fix the problem.

Call the following members of Congress immediately and tell them that an executive order by the president on abortion is unacceptable and urge them to vote NO on the pro-abortion health care bill.

Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund Pledges to Drive Out Pro-life Betrayers in November

WASHINGTON, DC - In response to Rep. "This Wednesday night is our third annual Campaign for Life Gala, where we were planning to honor Congressman Stupak for his efforts to keep abortion-funding out of health care reform-We will no longer be doing so. By accepting this deal from the most pro-abortion President in American history, Stupak has not only failed to stand strong for unborn children, but also for his constituents and pro-life voters across the country..."

Feminism's "Gendercide"

This week's feature writer is Mr. Joseph Meaney, HLI Director of International Coordination, who has visited more than 67 countries of the world in over a decade of service to the cause of life. He writes today on the international sex-selection abortion crisis.

Feminism's "Gendercide"
By Joseph Meaney

Wondrous news! The mainstream media and even the United Nations have "discovered" the 30 year old crisis of "missing girls." The Economist (the recent edition entitled, "Gendercide") and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) came out with the "news" that over 100 million girls and women that should be alive are not.

The culprits are parents who want to have sons only and use sonograms to identify the sex of their child in the womb. The end result is millions of sex-selection abortions of unwanted girls every year.

Pro-lifers have denounced this "slaughter of Eve" in the strongest terms for some time now. It is undoubtedly the greatest campaign of deadly discrimination against women in history. Incredibly, with few exceptions, the problem of sex-selection abortion is steadily worsening in Asia and around the world!

Pro-Life Groups Blast Executive Order Deal Between Stupak, Barack Obama

Washington, DC ( -- Leading pro-life organizations are unanimous in their condemnation of the a deal between Rep. Bart Stupak and President Barack Obama to exchange an executive order for votes from pro-life Democrats backing the pro-abortion Senate health care bill.

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins was clear in his opposition and said what many pro-life groups are thinking, that there could be consequences at the ballot box.

"Those few pro-life Democrats that would place the fate of the unborn in the hands of the President, will be placing their own political fate in those same hands secured only by a promise that runs counter to everything he has said and done," he told

He confirmed "there is no way that an executive order will protect the unborn or prevent the greatest expansion of elective abortion since Roe v. Wade.
"Pro-life lawmakers would be making a serious mistake to trust those who have repeatedly attempted to mislead the American people into believing that abortion is not in the bill," he added. Full story
